When I am called to duty,
God Wherever Flames may rage
Give me the strength to save some life
Whatever Be its age

Help me embrace a little child
Before it is too late
Or save an older person from
The horror of that fate

Enable me to be alert and
Hear the weakest shout
And quickly and efficiently
To put the fire out

I want to fill my calling and
To give the best in me
To guard my every neighbor
And protect their property

And if according to your will
I have to lose my life
Please bless with your protecting hand
My children and my wife

October 16, 2007

Well hello!

Its been a while since i updated!
Or rather id say, its a been a loonggg time!
Sorry for the long awaited post.
Ive actually been very busy with work and life.
Before i forget, i would like to wish all muslims a very happy

SELAMAT HARI RAYA!

Life has been great and the fasting month went over so quickly.
It was a testing time but i got through it unscathed.
The trials and tribulations of working in such an environment is very difficult.
We still do our usual drills and we still do rescue and fire fighting work.

The only major event that would require a special mention is the road traffic accident
at pioneer road north in the middle of the fasting month.
A big lorry carrying metal steel cables had an accident and the whole lot of
metal which was placed at the back of the lorry crashed down straight into
the front cabin, leaving the driver trapped inside the cabin.
Imagine having about 10 tons of metal stacked on top of you.
That is 10,000 kg of hard cold steel.
That was what the driver must have felt.

The sad thing is the driver was a muslim and he had already died when we arrived.
I did read from the papers that when the accident happened,
a passerby managed to talk to him and he was still responding.
Sadly he couldnt hold on. To die during the fasting month is a very sad thing.
And after about an hour of operation, we managed to get all the steel cables
out with the help of 2 lorry carrying "arm cranes".

But it was not over yet, we still had to cut through the cabin to get to the casualty.
After i had cut the front supporting pillars with my encik,
we finally managed to get him out of it.
I pulled him out with the rest of the crew and it was a miracle that he still looked fine.
The only thing that i noticed was that he was bleeding through the mouth and the ears.
The impact must be so strong that his internal organs were crushed.

I feel sad for him and his wife who later came after hearing the news.
Such a sad way to lose your loved ones.
She was crying non stop and what could she do?

I was very very exhausted after the operation but i still managed to fast.
It was hard but it was worth it.
You should know that wasnt the only incident that happened during fasting month.
We still had fires and rescues to do but if i were to write all about it here,
it would be a never ending post!
haha.

I know that to the normal public, they would always say,
" SINGAPORE WHERE GOT FIRE? "
And all they think about us is that we just sit and sleep and slack for 24 hrs.
THAT IS TOTALLY THE OPPOSITE!

Let me give u just a preview of what we do.

_____________________________________________________

8-9am
We beratur and our attendance is taken.
Then we proceed to check our appliance equipments with our firefighters

930-1045am
scenario drills! this is based on actual events such as ship fire fighting, warehouse fires,
unit fire, height rescue from 8th floor and many others. we do it as if it was the
real thing, so we will be wearing and using everything that is required in such an
operation.
This is the most tiring part of the day. And not forgetting the
vulgar words and stress we get from our officers if it did not go according to
what they think is right!

11-12 noon
CAAD. We don the chemical agent suit and do our training again. Push ups,
sit ups, jogging, carrying of casualty and many more. Wearing this suit, its
very difficult to breathe. Not for the faint hearted!

12-2pm
Lunch and rest!

Best part of the day!

2-5pm
Beratur for routine.
Different appliance will do different things.
For example, the fire engine wouldgo out and do enforcement or ops
survey checks. This is to make sure the fire safety of the premises is being maintained
and also for us to update the company info. Sometimes fun because we get to go
to shopping centres or mrt or nice companies.
But rather boring if we go to those industrial company where there is nothing to see but
tons of boring things.

Other appliances will proceed for hydrant testing, that is to check the water
pressure of those hydrants you see all around singapore. Thousands of them
in singapore! haha.

It can be fun too but most of the time tiring because we have to check up to
15 hydrants at a time.
And it is in the afternoon, so its freaking hot!
Those not involved will be at the fire station doing paper work. Tons of it!

5-730pm
My favourte time of the day! Its physical training time! Soccer is the main sport.
Some go to the gym while others go for a jog. But most would play soccer to keep us
strong and healthy! haha.

8-9pm
After our bath, we beratur again and then proceed for our night lecture. Every duty
is different and we teach the fire fighters about different topics such as our hazmat
detectors, our drills, equipments and many many more. That is why as a section commander
we need to know our stuff. If we dont, we wont have any knowledge to teach
the new fire fighters.
And after this, some will do paperwork while others will have their long awaited rest.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

515-6am
Early in the morning, we wake up and do our routine, cleaning up the whole station.
What a bummer!

6-7am
Another morning equipment drill early in the morning, we teach about what is
written on the drill sheet. All equipments will be taught and learned in the morning.
Sometimes you can see sleepy faces all over the place! haha

7-8am
Last drill of the duty!

We have specific drill such as water supply, foam, rescue and many more.
This drill is aimed more at the proficiency of our work.
Timing are taken and those who fail to meet them or do not know their
roles in the drill will be met with a semula, which means to do it all over
again till it is right.

Another tiring drill because we need to know at least about 10 drills to do
for each of the different task.

8-9am
Last but not least, another cleaning up of the fire station, but this time its the
outer area of the station. Sweeping up all the dry leaves and believe me,
at jurong, there are tons of it as the place is full of trees! haha.
And while doing that, we still have to make sure the equipments in our appliance
is in order since the other taking over rota will check.
If something is missing, we can go on and look for it for hours.
But if all is in order, its time to get ready to go home!

_____________________________________________________

As you can see, it is not an easy job. To add more to it, we still
attend fire calls and rescue incident during the whole 24 hours duty!
Imagine if you are in the toilet and you hear the siren for your appliance,
by hook or by crook you have to run out and wear your jacket and legging and
go for the call. That is because we have to respond by 1 min and reach the place
by about less than 8 mins. Failing to do so can result in serious consequences.
A letter of warning will be issued and this would greatly affect your promotion
and bonus issues.

So there you have it, there are more to it but that is roughly the gist of our life,
the life saving force. We are not always given credit, but we do our best to
help others because there is a certain amount of satisfaction when you
save someone, when you help someone in need and when you try your
best in whatever you do.

I think thats about it. Here are just some pics to refresh my memory on what i did
from now till the last post i put up!
Enjoy the pics!
ps/ i wanna put up my darling's birthday pics but i dont have it with me!
ill put it soon enough!
